Thanks for clarifying those details for readers unfamiliar with your blog, Augean Stables.David Paulinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09121507323458035173noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25038521.post-76243430010504899292008-06-24T22:04:00.000-05:002008-06-24T22:04:00.000-05:00as honored as i am to be in a list with Michael Yo...as honored as i am to be in a list with Michael Yon, Steven Vincent and Michael Totten, I am hardly someone who does much "on the spot" reporting (with the exception of the various coutroom sessions in Paris of the Karsenty-Enderlin defamation triel). on the other hand, what i may represent is a different category, that of a an outside observer and analyst of material coming from areas like the Palestinian territories where intimidation is rife, and the "on the spot" reporting cannot be relied on because it is censored and self-censored.

we medievalists are trained to reconstruct events based on partial evidence, so we have the kind of intellectual formation to consider what might be going on not just in a past we can no longer visit, but also a present where visiting guarantees disinformation.

given how many areas in the world are deeply hostile to any reporting that is not favorable to them (Arab/Muslim world and China come to mind), i think that "intelligence assessment" from the outside represents a major new direction in news reporting.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
